The company plans to keep the Google Meet name and the Google Duo app. The app will receive Google Meet functionality and the classic Google Meet app will be retired in the process. Google says it made the decision to “help people stay connected and adapt to changing user needs.”

In 2016, I wrote about an integrated retirement cycle at Google. At the time, the best example was Google+, but I also mentioned the Hangouts, Duo, and Allo messaging apps. Google shut down Allow in 2018, after two years of availability. Google planned to move users to Messages and announced that it would bring Allo features to Messages.

In 2019, Google announced plans to retire Hangouts, a popular messaging service, in favor of Chat and Meet.

Google is coming full circle with the June 2022 announcement. It all started with the split of Hangouts between the business product Meet and the two consumer products Allo and Duo. Allo was shut down first, and now Google is merging the two remaining products into one product again.

In the near future, Google customers will use a service, Google Meet, with Google Duo technology and Google Meet features, as their primary video and voice calling application. Google Duo functionality isn’t removed from the app, which means Google customers can continue to use the app to “video call friends and family by phone number or email address.” email, use fun filters and effects, send messages and ask Google Assistant to call using existing devices.”

Google plans to add “all Google Meet functionality to the Duo app” in the coming weeks, “so users can easily schedule a video meeting at a time that works for everyone, or continue to use the video calls to instantly connect with a person or a group”.

The new solution benefits from other Meet features, including custom virtual backgrounds in calls and meetings, in-meeting chats, live content sharing, real-time closed captioning support, and a increase in participants from 32 to 100 participants.

Once all Meet features are added to Duo, Google Meet customers will receive an upgrade offer to the new version. Additional information is available at this support page.

Now you: Do you use Google Meet or Duo? What is your opinion on this development?
